A couple weeks ago, I went to Bisbee to meet with a new gallery.
If you have never been to Bisbee, just plan to do it someday. I know that it looks like out of nowhere and not bigger than a mosquito dropping on a map, but it is well worth it. I can guarantee you that you won’t regret it.
Bisbee is a small community nestled in the Mule Mountains about 90 miles southeast of Tucson. The town boomed in the 1900’s as a large scale mining camp for gold, silver and copper. Most of the mines have closed in the 70’s and the town evolved into an artist/hippy colony.
5 reasons to visit Bisbee:
1- the atmosphere…
It is very laid back and does not have the “touristy” feeling of its close neighbor Tombstone. Romantic hotels and B&B’s, nice restaurants, friendly people, cooler and cleaner air you will make you feel relaxed right away. Although people don’t wear Stetson hats nor cowboy boots you cannot miss to feel the old West still alive while strolling through the streets.
2- the history of copper mining…
Let’s not forget that copper is what made Arizona and the rich copper mines of Bisbee made it one of the most productive mining district in the world. Two things to absolutely do to learn all about the history of copper mining are a visit to the Mine and History Museum and a tour of the the Queen Mine.
3- the shopping…
Cool antique stores and galleries are mostly located on Main Street. I especially recommend Panterra Gallery which proposes great clothes and a nice selection of my jewelry.
4- the events…
From classic cars to gems and minerals and paranormal… there is always something happening.
5- the ghosts…
Dead people are still alive in Bisbee. I personally had a cool ghostly encounter at the Copper Queen Hotel. Someone pulled my feet and tugged the bed sheets at about 4am in the room 212. It was so strong that it woke me up. I thought this was my husband moving around trying to get comfortable (the bed was a bit hard) but he was peacefully asleep. I also took a few interesting photos.

I do not know you, but a small town that claims to be the place where everyone is special and where you can pursue what makes you come alive is the kind of place that inspires me!
A bientôt!
